Conduct research including a mood board with possible ideas, existing posters that have inspired you etc.

I have done research into numerous horror film posters and I took inspiration from 6 of the many that I found. They are all shown bellow and I have done descriptions about why each one is a good film poster and all the different specific details that make each poster unique and stand out from the rest. I also wrote about the different character positioning s and size compared to each other and discovered that they were all exclusively unique to each other.

British Board of Film Classification. Research task.

What is their mission?

What do they do? “The BBFC is a trusted guide to media content. Working as an independent, self-financing and not-for-profit media content regulator, the BBFC operates transparent, consistent and trusted co-regulatory and self-regulatory classification and labelling systems in the UK.”

What do they do?

“The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), previously the British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organization, founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas and video works.”

U U rating: Films of this rating are suitable for anyone aged 4 or older and don’t contain any foul language or gruesome scenes. The issue with these is certain things may frighten certain children. There also won’t be any drugs or sexual content here.

PG 13PG ratings: These films won’t be suitable for young children however will be suitable for some older children. These usually include minor language and occasional crude humour however there will be nothing too extreme.

12 age rating12A ratings: The 12A rating is only used for films shown in cinemas. Films rated 12A are suitable for children aged 12 and over. However, people younger than 12 may see a 12A so long as they are accompanied by an adult. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.

12 rating12 rating: The 12 rating is only a small bit greater than the 12 A rating. These may contain minor violence but never to a severe extreme that would call for the rating to possibly increased to a 15 or higher. These films are for people aged 12 or older however people younger than 12 may see these if accompanied by an adult.

15 age rating15 ratings: These are only for those who are 15 or over as they may contain several possible minor gore scenes and possible crude humour.

18 age rating18 ratings: These films contain extreme violence along with swearing and possible sexual and drug references. These films are for only people who are of ages 18 or above.

r 18 R18 ratings: R18 stands for Restricted 18. This rating is the highest rating a film can be given and is only for those who are 18 or older. These often include extreme sexual and violent scenes without any censorship at all. It may even be illegal for people who are younger than 18 to watch these films at all.

The Dark knight:

The film I have chosen to write about is the Dark Knight.

The film The Dark Knight that came out in 2008 was initially released at a PG rating. However this caused a minor uproar as people thought that characters like the Joker and Two face’s designs and actions were way too graphic and violent for a minor PG rating some even went as far as to call for a 15 or even 18 age rating however BBFC eventually settled for the 12A rating. Even today people think that that is not good enough and still call for the 15 and 18 rating however this has not happened and even to this day the film remains of a 12A age rating. There are also certain scenes in general that are too violent for the PG rating for example Joker stabbing a pencil through someones head or eye to kill them this however wasn’t gory enough for the 12 rating so it stayed in the 12A rating category. There also wasn’t much foul language involved that would buffer it to a 15 or 12 so the 12A category was deemed appropriate for the possible more mature content of this film.

Poster Design

My Poster:                                                          Official Poster:

Screen Shot 2018-11-28 at 14.54.39Alien vs Predator

I have used similar images to that of the official poster for I have used both the alien and the predator I have also included the title of  the film onto the plain black background. I tried to position the Predator so that it was standing behind the Alien however I did not have the room to do that so now the Predator looks like he’s floating. I also added in he 15 age rating at the bottom which the original was lacking. In both the Predator appears to be looking directly at the viewer which may add a feeling of fear. Like the actual post I chose to use a blank background so people don’t get too distracted on the background. I also included the release date for the film but I added the word released above it so people know what the date numbers are meant to be. However I got a contrast in colour instead on the white background with the black title and text I chose to use the black background with white text.

I had a minor issue with the age rating of the film as it told me it was a PG rating then I found out later it was actually a 15 rating so that was a minor change I had to make in the end.

Photoshop Blending Images

My Photoshop Poster:

Poster

The picture above is a photoshopped image created, using Adobe photoshop .

I started this by using two separate images of the couple and the horse and had to use various features in photoshop such as adjusting the brightness and an altering the size without distorting or making it to pixilated the image too much. My end objective was to blend the two separate into one single poster. I had to edit the contrast on all the different layers to finally get the end result which is shown above.

I finished by using the colour change filter to add the brown colour scheme to my poster after changing it from black and white which was then changed from the full original colours of  the original two images I used.

Film Trailer Analysis

Name of film: Blade Runner 2049

What type of film is it: Sci Fi

Screen Shot 2018-11-06 at 10.03.56

What can I see in the trailer: The trailer tells me that  the film takes place in a futuristic world. It also looks very exciting and makes people want to go see it.

harrison ford

How much do I see: You only get to see approximately 2 minutes of various clips from the film meshed together. We learn about the general plot and scenery of the film during this trailer.

Blade runner

The trailer makes me want to watch the film as it shows some of the better parts of the film in the trailer for example it shows that Harrison Ford is in the film this will cause fans of Harrison Ford to want to go to see the film.Harrison Ford other

I think both young and older people would watch it as older people might have seen the original and younger people might think it looks interesting and want to go to see it because of the explosions and action.Explosion

I personally think that this is a perfect example of a good trailer because it shows a lot of the good parts of the film without giving away too many plot spoilers. Instead it gives away just enough to understand whats going on.

Blade Runner 2

American assassin:

What type of film is it: Action

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 13.47.54

Fighting includes fast paced and dramatic action.

What can I see: The fact that they use a secluded area to train the assassins show off a more secretive element to this action film that others may not possess. This also a feeling of excitement in this scene an it builds tension and drama.Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 13.57.52

You only get to see approximately 2 minutes of various spliced together clips set at various points in the film and it shows the general plot of the protagonist losing his girlfriend in a terrorist attack and seeks revenge.

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 14.06.34

This trailer makes me want to go to see the film as it show segments of a film that looks great as it shows some interesting action scenes without giving away the whole movie. As seen below.Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 14.14.56

I think younger people would be more likely to want to see this film because older people may find it too violent and possibly gruesome.

Screen Shot 2018-11-07 at 14.24.25

I think this is a great trailer as it shows many great details for example showing the protagonists motives for wanting to become an assassin. However the trailer also doesn’t give away too many spoilers to the plot and leaves many reasons for viewers to be interested in watching it.

Audio analysis:

Helps us make sense of the narrative by giving us background information such as where the background is set:

Examples of this: The music only cues in after the flashbacks of his girlfriends murder are over up to that point its just silence. This leaves any flashbacks in complete silence. Also the audio gets louder towards the later stages of the trailer which is when the action occurs.

Informs us about the characters, Show cases the stars appearing in the film:

Examples of this: The music starts right after the protagonists face is revealed which is a common trend in trailers this is usually to solidify who the protagonist is to the audience. Also when the old man tells the protagonist to “kill him” the music suddenly stops abruptly which is to signify a build up in tension around that scene in particular.

Gives us information on production i.e. director etc

Examples of this: Certain directors that specialise in action movies will very often include loud audio to add intensity and drama to their trailers and films.

Reinforces the title of the film:

Example of this: Throughout the trailer the audio is used to reinforce the dark and depressing feel of the film this is likely used because the film is a naturally dark and serious film therefor it would be improper to have a bright ,happy and colourful audio.

Sets the tone for the film:

Examples of this: The audio sets the tone of the film because it possesses the dark and serious nature required. Also the there is no music in the opening scene which then leads into quiet but dark music then it finally gets much louder towards the end of the trailer which draws viewers attention.

Helps us anticipate what’s to come in the film:

Examples: The slow increase in audio parallels the slow increase in tension and drama . This is emphasised by the loud music and more talking that is shown at the end of the trailer compared to at the start where there is no music and only a limited amount of talking.

The improvements I was given by my peer were as follows:

Need to add who was involved in making the trailer.

Michael Cuesta as the director and was produced by

Add more on where it took place

The trailer takes place in various locations for example a beach and in the woods.

What is the relationship between characters?

The two main characters shown in the trailer appear to have a bit of a rocky relationship.

How did everything happen?

Everything started when the protagonist’s girlfriend was killed on a beach.

AquaMan:

Aquaman has been advertised among various methods as shown bellow.

Facebook:

Instagram:

Newspaper:

Newspaper aquaman

Magazine:

Magazine aquaman

Positioning:

Each film advert shows the best and most interesting  aspects of the film and has constant positive remarks to make about it over all the different platforms of advertising that I have looked found.

Different forms of advertising:

Judging by the methods of advertising I presume that the target audience is that of an early to late teen as a few of the adverts are on forms of social media for example Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to which children shouldn’t have access to however teenagers might have access to social media platforms.

Aqua man poster:

Aquaman poster

Lighting:

The lighting appears to be much brighter to the right hand side of the screen to give off a more realistic vibe towards the poster also the brightness of the background is at a point where you can see clearly what the poster is meant to show.

Use of colour:

The majority of the colour used aqua blue this is a perfect fit for the fact the the film is about Aquaman and is all about the ocean therefore the aqua  blue colour scheme is by far the most appropriate colour to use in the colour scheme. However the blue doesn’t completely wash  out the other colours for example Aquaman isn’t all blue  as well.

Title:

The title is shown in large text at the bottom of the post along with the Aquaman symbol so people know what the film is.

The main image:

The main image shows Aquaman in the ocean surrounded by various sea creatures with the title and all the text at the bottom. There is also a white light at the far back which may represent the sun.

Review:

There is no review on the poster.

Tag line:

It says “Home is calling” at the top of the poster which may lead some audiences to be interested on what “Home” means.

Production details:

The are no production details on this poster.

Star’s name:

There is no mention of the lead actor’s name on the poster so some may recognize him whereas others won’t.

Graphic style: All the text is in a bold white font which makes it stand out and be more noticeable.

How do they sell the film:

The poster makes the film look interesting as it’s full of detail and good imagery for example the various sea creatures shown in the background and the underwater feel give the film a more appealing nature.

Release date:

The date is written just below the title so those who read the title may read the release date.

Age certificate:

There is no age written anywhere on the poster but the style of imagery used in the poster gives a hint on the age that the film is aimed at early to late teens and young adults.

Pre-production

I had to look into the locations of where I would be filming to see which would be the best areas beforehand this would make the filming procedure far more easy and simple.

I had to make notes about the different locations I looked into and then added the information to the location recce.

Jack Otter (2)

I also had a look into the script and see which areas were best for which parts of the script which is shown below

‘Welcome to Runshaw College in Leyland. Set in beautiful surroundings the college buildings are easy to find and are modern and purpose built. (Student entrance)

Our newest addition to campus is the bright and airy study areas right next to our café “The Octagon” where you can pop in for a latte, a chat with friends and relax in your free time between lessons and enjoy the college radio station that broadcasts daily. (Octagon)

Friendly staff are here to help you study and learn.  At Runshaw, we are much more than just a college we are a community’.

Location recce: A term used in UK, Australia and new Zealand which refers to a pre filming visit to a location to determine if its suitable for shooting also analyzing for  any potential lighting and sound issue.

Montage: This is ” a single pictorial composition made by superimposing many pictures or designs.

Pan: Pan is a specific movement of a camera which includes the moving the camera from side to side slowly this is often used to get a shot of a roughly large area this is done without moving the camera around.

Tilt: Tilt is another specific camera movement however this one is an up and down movement while staying in a fixed position this is commonly used to film high rooms or used to show a shot that goes up or down.

Production

Before I could do any filming I needed to gather the appropriate equipment for example a camera and tripod. I also needed the storyboard and the shot list.

We followed the plan for where the pictures were to be taken exactly as it said.  The first location that was filmed was at the student entrance. This had to be reshot as people kept walking in front of the camera.

The next location was the Mardale shop. We decided to use a close up shot of the shop sign as we wanted to show one of the cafes/shop in college.

The next was  a mid shot of the football court as we wanted to show the whole court. This shows one of the enrichment areas at Runshaw.

We then did a mid shot of the bridge as it is one of the nicer outdoor areas and we wanted another outdoor shot of the college.

We wanted to show a busy area with students working so we decided to film in the study zone. Before we could film there though we had to ask the permission of the students who were working there if they were happy to be filmed.

We also had to reshoot the last scene of the car park because people kept walking in front of the camera again.

We had to go to the editing suite to record the script so we could add sound to the film. We discussed in our team who would record which part of the script and we each took it in turn to read our part of the script.
